Sharjah Activates "Baby And Mother-Friendly Nurseries" Initiative
(1 May 2012)

The committee behind the “Baby and Mother-Friendly Nurseries” initiative met with officials representing several governmental nurseries in Sharjah. This is part of the execution of the “Sharjah: Baby-Friendly Emirate” campaign, which was initiated under the slogan "The right start for a better future" with material and moral support from His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah.

Commenting on this initiative, Ms Rasmiya Al Shamsi, President of “Baby and Mother-Friendly Nurseries” initiative committee stated: “The objective of our meeting with representatives of nurseries related to governmental entities in Sharjah is to create common ground and facilitate efforts to create an environment where nurseries become friends of the mother and the child."

Furthermore, the meeting highlighted the “Dependable” policy pursued by the campaign, which entails registering nurseries affiliated with various institutions within the friendly nurseries system, followed by an instructive visit by the campaign team. After that, the nursery commits to taking custody and adopts the necessary actions to fulfill the required standards of the nurseries. Finally, an assessment visit is made before granting a certificate of accreditation as a friend of the mother and child.

It is worth mentioning that all nurseries directors who participated in the meeting registered for this program, marking the start of procedures for obtaining certification.

Her Highness Sheikha Budoor bint Sultan Al Qasimi, President of the “Sharjah: Baby-Friendly Emirate” campaign will honor the nurseries who have obtained the total appropriation in a yearly event. This campaign is seen as confirming the vital role played by Sharjah in enhancing the welfare of its residents, and reinforcing health security for all social categories.

Dr. Hessa Khalfan Al Ghazal, Director of the Executive Committee explained from its part that the implementation of the initiative will take place on several phases as governmental and semi-governmental nurseries are targeted in the first phase, whereas the private nurseries will be covered in the second phase in coordination with the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health Education Department at Sharjah Municipality.
