His Excellency Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qassimi, Chairman of Sharjah Media Corporation and President of the Higher Organizing Committee of Sir Bu Nair Environmental and Heritage Festival, today inaugurated the 13th edition of the festival.
The inauguration ceremony took place in the presence of His Excellency Ali Saqr Al Suwaidi, Chairman of Emirates Marine Environment Group, His Excellency Lieutenant Colonel Ahmed Al Suwaidi, Head of Support Services in Sharjah Police, His Excellency Dr Khalid Omar Al Madfai, Director of Sharjah Radio and Television, His Excellency Rashed Al Kous, Director of Knowledge without Borders project, Osama Samra, Director, Sharjah Media Centre and Khalifa Al Shibani, Director of Wekaya. The event was additionally attended by key figures in Sharjah and the community at large.
The Sir Bu Nair Island is considered one of the most important turtle nesting sites worldwide. The life cycle of hawksbill turtles approximately spans over 120 years. They are also known to migrate across the region.
As part of the island’s wildlife monitoring programme, the opening ceremony of the festival witnessed the release of a turtle from the hawksbill species. Named ‘Sharjah’, a satellite tag has been fixed to the carapace of the turtle to help track its activities as it traverses international waters. The initiative is being carried out in conjunction with the Environment and Protected Areas Authority, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Emirates Wildlife Society (EWS).
Her Excellency Hana Al Suwaidi, Chairperson of Environment and Protected Areas Authority in Sharjah, stressed the importance of the Sir Bu Nair Island as the only site in the UAE that features on the UNESCO’s primary list of World Heritage Sites. She additionally highlighted its role in attracting ecotourism and articulating Sharjah’s commitment to environmental protection.
As part of its participation at the Sir Bu Nair Environmental and Heritage Festival, Sharjah Media Centre (SMC) is hosting a dedicated media centre at the event. Reiterating its mission to strengthen the emirate’s position on the global map, SMC has invited leading media persons to the event and is facilitating their activities to disseminate news on the event.
Sir Bu Nair Environmental and Heritage Festival is supported by the Environment and Protected Areas Authority, Commerce Tourism Development Authority, Department of Culture and Information, Department of Heritage and Cultural Affairs, Sharjah Police and Sharjah Media Corporation.
