Sharjah Baby-Friendly Emirate Campaign Awards Commitment Certification To Sharjah Model Nursery
(19 June 2012)

Sharjah Baby-Friendly Emirate Campaign has presented a Commitment Certificate to Sharjah Model Nursery, as a token of appreciation for the nursery’s collaboration with the campaign. The nursery’s proactive improvements include dedicating a separate room in which mothers can nurse their babies. The event included hosting a lecture regarding breastfeeding and returning back to work.

Aisha Abdullah, Director of Sharjah Model Nursery, expressed her delight with the recognition her nursery received: “Our first priority is always the well-being of the babies. Therefore since breastfeeding has numerous benefits for babies, we enthusiastically support it. This explains our keenness to work side by side with the Sharjah Baby-Friendly Emirate Campaign team, to raise awareness in the community. This has culminated in us proudly receiving accreditation as the second baby-friendly nursery.”

The event was attended by several prominent personalities, most notably Aisha Saif, Secretary General of Sharjah Education Council, and Aisha Abdullah, Director of Sharjah Model Nursery as well as the committee of breastfeeding-friendly nurseries initiative . A number of nursery directors and mothers also turned up to express their support.

During the event, Eman Torky, a renowned health educator, delivered a lecture entitled “Breastfeeding and returning back to work”. She highlighted the advantages of breastfeeding for both the mother and her baby. She made special mention of the importance of suction and safe storage of milk during working hours.

The event is in line with the commendable contributions made by Sharjah Baby-Friendly Emirate Campaign, which was initiated under the generous patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Budoor bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq), President of the Campaign and Honorary President of the Breastfeeding Friends Association.

In a related development, Sharjah Baby-Friendly Emirate Campaign is collaborating with Knowledge Without Borders in its campaign: “Let’s Read To Them”. The partnership will entail the provision of a wide variety of books in order to help children grow up with a passionate interest in reading. Dr Hessa Khalfan Al Ghazal, Director of the Executive Committee of Sharjah Baby-Friendly Emirate Campaign, expressed her appreciation and optimism regarding this collaboration, stating: “From birth, children are wonderfully curious. They have a great thirst for knowledge, and books are the perfect way to nurture their passion. Just as breastfeeding is vital from a physical and emotional perspective, books are equally imperative to children’s well-being from a mental point of view. Therefore, we will make sure to distribute the books on the different nurseries that we have visited.”
