Sharjah Municipality
Founded in the year 1927, Sharjah Municipality is one of the oldest municipalities in the UAE and the Arab Gulf region. Its modern system is initiated when in the year 1971 a decree was issued defining its domain of activities to embrace the supervision of all public utilities and the rendering of various services.
The decree gave the Municipality a strong start to work towards a civilized and economically and socially well-developed emirate. However, in this short expose the role of the Municipality cannot be detailed.
The Municipality is a civil governing institute that manages all services and utilities offered to the modern civil society.
The municipality has gone through many stages of development since its foundation affecting its administration structure, branches, budget and functions.

Residential and Public Parks in Sharjah Emirate
Since its foundation, Sharjah Municipality has started its wide covering green projects to construct public and residential parks in different areas and cities of the emirate, believing that such parks provide important open spaces to Sharjah residents and tourists visiting the emirate.
While establishing these recreational projects, Sharjah Municipality has taken into consideration the valualble directives of H.H. Shiekh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohamed AL Qasimi – Sharjah Ruler, to provide open areas with children’s recreational facilities, special places for families and ladies, in order to make them as social clubs for Sharjah society where people can meet and enjoy the open air. Green areas have been created to provide sports facilities and space for a range of outdoor activities such as football, basketball, walking, and jogging.
Sharjah city now boasts 21 parks with a total area of 411 thousand square meters, whereas 12 gardens are under construction in new areas, which are part of a plan to cover all Sharjah areas.
Drainage Department
Sharjah Municipality Drainage Department manages main sewage treatment plant (located at industrial area 5) and 3 main pumping stations (up to April 2008). The sewage treatment plants utilize the sewage bacteria to consume organic material and convert ammonia to nitrates.
Chemicals (chlorine) and ultra violet light are used to disinfect (destroying pathogens) the treated effluent water.
Surplus solids are removed and biosolids are generated. The final sludge is treated and used as fertilizer.
