On both the regional and international level, the emirate of Sharjah has long been recognized as the cultural capital of the UAE and the Arab World. Al Qasba
Since its foundation, Al Qasba has been a place of immense intellectual discovery and artistic expression. This journey began years ago as Al Qasba reached out to community organizations in designing some of the most spectacular interactive events ever seen in the emirate. At the time, Maraya Art Centre was the prime exhibition space for all of Al Qasba’s exhibitions, and the facility’s calendar was quickly becoming overbooked with corporate and social affairs. Inspired by the incredible amount of enthusiasm for these events, Al Qasba announced a series of refurbishment projects to expand and enhance the destination’s exposition facilities in 2007. The AED 6.5 million project was conducted in two separate phases and was finalized in late 2009.
Maraya
The newly revived Maraya Art Centre was officially launched in March 2010 as one of the UAE’s most spectacular venues for contemporary visual arts. Spreading across over 1500 square meters of immaculate gallery space located in the heart of UAE’s cultural capital, the three-storey art centre is a stage for creative experimentation and a testament to the region’s extraordinary artistic genius, hosting a panorama of the region’s finest compositions.
Maraya can be used for any number of design purposes and is comfortably fitted with all the amenities you would expect from a world-class gallery. Visitors are invited to attend lectures led by featured artists, enroll in specialized workshops for students, teens and adults, and enjoy daily tours of the centre’s three main levels.
The first level is known as “The Shelter”, a multimedia haven for artists seeking to make their own impact on the local scene. With a strong commitment to showcasing works by artists from the Arab world, the second level features a permanent exhibition titled The House of Arab Art. Not limiting itself to the region, a Contemporary Art Gallery on the top level features dramatic and avant-garde pieces selected from some of the most promising names in the world of modern art.
